Planning an Accessible Bathroom in Miami
Miami-Dade has one of the largest older populations in the country, and accessible bathroom work here is ordinary, practical, and increasingly indistinguishable from good modern design.
These projects usually start with a specific reason: a parent moving in, a knee replacement on the calendar, or a decision to stay in a house owned since the 1980s rather than move. The good news is that the design vocabulary for accessible bathrooms has converged with the design vocabulary for expensive modern ones. Curbless glass showers, wide doorways, lever hardware, and comfort-height toilets are sold as luxury features in every new tower downtown.
Start with clear floor space
If a wheelchair or walker is part of daily life, floor space decides whether the room works, before any fixture choice matters. The benchmark is a 60-inch turning circle, or an approved T-shaped turning space, plus clear approach space at each fixture. In a typical Miami 5-by-8 bathroom that space does not exist, which is why these projects sometimes annex an adjacent closet.

The doorway
Thirty-two inches of clear width is the working minimum, and clear width is measured with the door open, not the frame dimension. Where widening the opening is impractical, swing-clear hinges recover a couple of inches by moving the door leaf fully out of the opening. A pocket door removes the swing entirely and frees floor area on both sides, which in a small bathroom is often the single most valuable change.
Zero-entry showers, and why Miami suits them
The threshold at a shower entry is the feature that becomes a problem first, and removing it is the core of most accessible bathroom projects. Miami's slab-on-grade construction is friendlier to curbless showers than wood-framed floors: the slope can be created by recessing the slab in the shower zone during the remodel, or by building up the surrounding floor slightly so the shower falls away from it. A linear drain along one wall reduces the whole thing to a single-plane slope.
Inside, the useful pieces are a fold-down seat, a handheld spray on a slide bar reachable from seated height, and a thermostatic or anti-scald valve set to a safe maximum. Floor tile should be chosen for wet traction rather than polish, which the tile guide covers in detail.
Grab bars, anchored properly
This is where Miami construction offers a genuine advantage, provided the installation is done correctly. Grab bars are rated to support substantial load, and a bar that pulls out of the wall causes precisely the fall it was installed to prevent.
On a furred concrete block wall, bars anchor into the block itself using sleeve, wedge, or epoxy masonry anchors rated well beyond the design load, with the flange bridging the furring cavity so it bears solidly rather than crushing the drywall. Done that way, the anchorage is stronger than wood blocking in a framed house. On interior wood-framed partitions, bars need blocking added inside the wall during the remodel, which is why deciding on grab bar locations before the walls close is worth doing even if the bars themselves go in later.
Placement should follow the actual person's transfer pattern rather than a generic diagram. An occupational therapist walkthrough before design is common here and worth the modest cost.
The rest of the room
Comfort-height toilets, roughly 17 to 19 inches to the seat, with clear side transfer space where the room allows. Lever faucet handles and lever door hardware rather than knobs. Rocker light switches. A sink with knee clearance underneath if seated use is expected, which usually means a wall-hung basin or an open vanity. And brighter, more even lighting than a standard bathroom, with a low-level night path light on its own switch, since falls happen disproportionately at night.
What it costs
A focused scope, converting a tub to a zero-entry shower with seating, grab bars, and non-slip flooring, runs $12,000 to $20,000 in this market. A whole-room accessible rebuild with a widened doorway, relocated fixtures for turning clearance, and layered lighting runs $20,000 to $30,000, and more if plumbing moves in the slab. Grab bars added to an existing bathroom with correct anchoring run a few hundred dollars each installed and are the highest-value safety spend in the category.
Health insurance generally does not cover this work. Some veterans qualify for VA home adaptation grants, which is worth investigating early since the application takes time.
Resale, honestly
The worry that an accessible bathroom reads as institutional is largely out of date, and especially so in Miami. A curbless glass shower with good tile reads as contemporary, not medical. In a metro with a large share of buyers over 55, a bathroom that works for the next twenty years is something agents point out on purpose rather than explain away.
